Make an impressive first impression!
Tips for a successful application

A good application opens the door to your future career. Make a good impression from the very start by giving a positive account of your qualifications and personality. These tips will help you do this:

1. Make sure that your application documents are complete.

A good application usually includes the following:

  • Cover letter
  • CV
  • All relevant references and certificates

2. Use the cover letter to catch the recruiter’s interest.

  • What role are you applying for?
  • Why are you interested in the role?
  • What experience do you have? Why are you the ideal candidate?
  • When could you start?

Make sure that the cover letter is well-structured (not more than one page, e.g. three paragraphs, each of max. four lines). Writing a brief and concise letter shows that you know what counts.

Those new to the job market should mention internships, summer jobs or voluntary work.

3. Attach an up-to-date CV

  • Structure the CV as a table
  • Start with what you have done most recently
  • Give detailed information on what your roles have been so far
  • Make sure that the CV is easy to read

If you want to attach a photo (not essential!), it should not be more than a year old. Make sure that you look tidy. The photo should be taken by a professional, not cropped from a personal photo.

4. Stick to the standards

  • HR staff spend an average of 30 seconds on an application. Avoid endless descriptions and get to the point.
  • Make sure that your application is well-structured and easy to read, and uses the same font throughout.
  • Check the texts carefully for spelling and grammar mistakes.
  • Make sure that the name of your contact is spelled correctly.
  • Adhere to the usual rules for written correspondence (e.g. paragraphs, spacing, font sizes).
  • When applying online or by email, only attach files that can be opened on any standard computer. Ideally, you should convert all Word documents into PDF documents with a size of less than 4 MB before sending.

5. How do others do it?

We recommend browsing the Internet, for example, to get some ideas. You will find plenty of templates and sample applications – many of them free – to help you structure your own application.

Ask friends and/or family to read through your application and give you feedback. Perhaps they have some suggestions for improvement or can spot mistakes that need to be corrected.
